Around 7 am, it was noisy, so my husband K got up. I slept a little longer and then we went to breakfast at 7:50. We discovered that it had rained overnight.
We packed up the car and checked out, getting on the road at 9:01, with the odometer reading 58,657.
It wasn't long before we hit some rain. It was a hit and miss thing.
K figured that as we headed south on US 17, we would run into farm stands. At 10:19 (58,724), he pulled into the Boone Hall Farm Market north of Mt. Pleasant, SC. I didn't get out, but let him go off to find what he wanted, while I worked on needlework. He found some tomatoes and such, but no peaches. We were on the road again at 10:33.
Soon, we could see the superstructure of a bridge ahead. It was the Arthur J. Ravenel, Jr. Bridge- a very Southern name. As we crossed it, we were going over the area, where the Wando and Cooper Rivers joined. Upstream, we could see some of Charleston's industrial port. It was the most interesting bridge we crossed all day.
At 11:59 (58,790), I suggested we stop at the Carolina Cherry Co., aka Carolina Cider Co., near Yemassee, SC as we neared I-95. I thought that they might have lunch, but no such luck. They did have wonderful ciders, preserves, and more. I found a small Charleston sweetgrass basket for a very reasonable price, too. We bought things for ourselves and for gifts, before getting on the road again at 12:19.
They had not had a restroom, which was most unfortunate.
It rained for all of two minutes, starting at 12:24. It was going to be that kind of day.
Finally, at 12:29 (58,791) we found a McDonald's at the intersection with I-95. I got the Tomato, Grilled Chicken and Mozzarella meal for $7.39. K got a Grilled Chicken Salad for $4.99 and a coffee for $1.20. Tax was $1.50- more than the coffee! Fortified, we left at 12:31 in the rain.
I've realized that on this trip, other than a photo of K with his college friend in Atlanta, I haven't gotten photos with any of the people we visited. What the heck?! There's a missed series of opportunities.
I managed to get needlework done, but I did my usual dozing off, too. Staying conscious just isn't always possible.
At 2:09 (58,835), when we stopped at the Georgia welcome center on I-95, it was cloudy, but not raining. However, when we got on the road again at 2:16, there were sprinkles.
It was 3:47 (58,946), when we crossed into Florida and we stopped at the Florida welcome center three miles down the road at 3:53. It was sunny, when we left at 4:04.
We decided to take advantage of the chance to stop at Harry & David's at the St. Augustine Outlets at 5:07 (59,012). We didn't find as much as usual to tempt us there. We did stop in the Jockey outlet, because they were having a sale. Since it was the back-to-school tax holiday, we saved even more money. We left at 5:58.
We were beginning to get hungry for dinner and finally stopped at 7:01 (59,073) at Panera in Daytona, because it seemed to be the easiest place. K got a You-Pick-2 with a 1 cup Vegetable Sprouted Grain Soup for $4.20 and a half Steak Baby Arugula sandwich for $6.50. Because of my Panera card, we saved $2 on that deal. I got the Summer Caprese Salad for $10.29 and Plum Ginger Iced Tea for $2.39. Tax was $1.58. We both really enjoyed our meals.
When we left at 7:44, we headed down US 92 and under the interstate to get gas at 7:52 (59,074) at RaceTrac. Diesel was $2.759 a gallon here and we got 11.647 gallons, so the car was definitely thirsty. We'd gone 453.9 miles on this tank for an average of 38.9714 miles per gallon. I'm going to miss this kind of mileage, when we get home.
We were on the road at 7:55 and going down I-4. The light was not good for needlework. So, all I could do was look out at the familiar scenery. When we crossed Lake Jesup on the 417 at 8:35, we had a beautiful sunset view with a sliver of moon.
We were home just 16 minutes later. The odometer read 59,127. We put 3,578 miles on the car on this trip. I was in seven states and K was in six. And we had a great time!
