London and 14-Day Arctic Circle Crossing: Edinburgh Evening Stay Holland America Cruise: Day 8 At Sea May 19, 2025

My husband K got up at 7:15 and went off to the gym. He would do breakfast on his own, because my daughter J and I were going to take advantage of the sea day and go have brunch in the dining room. That let me sleep in until 8:30. When I got up, it was 51.8°.

J arrived, coughing, at 9. My allergies had not pushed me as far as hers pushed her.

At 9:20, we were seated at a table with a couple from Belgium and a couple from Rotterdam. The latter had taken the cruise around the British Isles that directly preceded this one. When it docked in Rotterdam, they just went home for coffee and to do some laundry before coming back aboard for this trip.

J and I decided on the Alesund Steak and Egg Skillet, since that is our destination tomorrow. And, even though we are not going to Sweden on this trip, we also got Swedish Berry Pancakes stacks. I got a mimosa, since it is brunch, and J got her usual apple juice. It was a delicious meal.

We were out at 10:10 and ran into K 5 minutes later.  We were collecting stamps from various locations for a jewelry raffle. He went off to read.

At 11, J and I participated in the Scavenger Hunt.  We had to get some really unusual things: a photo of the art studio teacher; yesterday's daily plan; a cook with a banana; a clerk holding a best selling item; a bartender singing; a room steward talking about his favorite port; a picture of one of us in a shower cap and eating an apple. We did not win, but we had fun.

We then went to get the crossword from the library and sat down to solve it.

At 12:15, we went to the shopping show, but did not win anything, but we didn't expect to.

At 1:20, we went to the Lido for lunch. I got an Italian sub, because the line for salad was crazy. J and I split Dulce de Leche Cheese Cake, strawberry mousse cake, and churros. She also picked up a double chocolate cookie for me. We both had soda.

2:30 found us in the watercolor class in the Art Studio on deck 12. We did jelly fish and they turned out fairly well.

We had to fly down to deck 2 at the other end of the ship to go to the dining room for the Royal Dutch Tea. We were only 5 minutes late. K joined us, which meant we had someone to eat the fish sandwich. The tea was PG Tips, which wasn't one I'd heard of. We've become really rather fond of afternoon teas. I love the scones with clotted cream. Someone on Facebook noted that although this was billed as Dutch tea, the flag is French!

Back in the room at 3:45, I went out on the veranda and saw nothing but the blue sky and the North Sea. It was chilly, though.

We'd stopped by the dining podium to ask to get an assigned time. We were given 5 pm, which is a little early, but doable. So, at 5, we went to the podium in the dining room entrance for folks with reservations and we were quickly seated.

Since we have the highest drink package as a perk with our cruise, K was not shy about ordering wine again tonight. He got a Castle Rock Cabernet Sauvignon for $9 and even got a Chateau Smith Cabernet, when he finished that. I  had iced tea and J had Coke.

I ordered the Prosciutto Ham and Cheese for an appetizer and so did K. J got the Orange Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail. The latter came with melon slices. Both were good.

For a main course, K and I both chose the Cracked Pepper Tenderloin with Grilled Shrimp. J went with Rack of Lamb and Cannellini beans. I wished they'd taken the tail off the shrimp and the lamb could have had less fat.

We worked harder to get three different desserts and we had success- creme brûlée, caramel lava cake, and Black Forest cake. The cake was the most difficult to figure out how to split 3 ways.

At 6:20, we were finished and went to our cabins to relax. At 7:13, though, K and J went to hear the fiddle virtuoso. I decided to relax and watched Beach Blanket Bingo. I never realized how old-fashioned Frankie was in his attitude toward what DeeDee could do. He was looking for a 1950's wife. Paul Lynde was a riot, of course.

The phone recorded 5,660 steps for 2.2 miles and 1 floor, which seems too few.
